Thunderbolts 2025 Movie Review
The opening of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film sets a gripping tone. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the Russian assassin and Black Widow’s adoptive sister, confesses, “There is something wrong with me,” revealing an inner emptiness before leaping off a ledge. It’s no suicide attempt—she dives into a combat mission orchestrated by cunning CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to destroy incriminating evidence and avoid impeachment.
As Yelena considers fighting for a nobler cause, Valentina enlists her alongside operatives John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) for a final mission to clean up loose ends at a remote facility. The team soon uncovers a betrayal: they’re the loose ends, manipulated to eliminate each other. They’re joined by Bob (Lewis Pullman), who’s disoriented, recalling only a medical procedure before waking up there. The film’s tone shifts from bleak and introspective to explosive action as Yelena and this band of antiheroes unite to take down Valentina while confronting their personal struggles.
Director Jake Schreier, with writers Joanna Calo and Eric Pearson, crafts more than a typical superhero spectacle. While delivering stunning set pieces, dynamic action, and MCU’s signature humor, the film distinguishes itself with emotional depth, exploring mental health and the value of seeking help. Bob, deeply traumatized, transforms into the formidable supervillain Void, whose power surpasses all Avengers combined. His arc highlights the battle against inner demons, emphasizing the peril of suppressing emotions rather than confronting them.
