Shadow Force opens with Isaac Sarr (Omar Sy, exuding charm and competence as an action hero), a devoted father raising his lively 5-year-old son, Ky (Jahleel Kamara, a standout with infectious charisma). Living a quiet life, Isaac shares tales of Ky’s absent mother and their mutual love for Lionel Richie. He’s candid about his past—admitting he was once a “bad guy” who believed he was doing good—but keeps the violence of his history hidden from Ky. This protective instinct shines in the film’s first major action scene: during a bank robbery, Isaac, taken hostage, instructs Ky to cover his eyes and ears. In a frenetic, strobe-like sequence, Isaac swiftly dispatches the robbers single-handedly.
The story soon reveals Isaac’s past through Jack Cinder (Mark Strong, savoring his villainous role), a cold-blooded figure tied to an elite covert unit called Shadow Force. Isaac and fellow operative Kyrah Owens (Kerry Washington, effortlessly wielding weapons and martial arts) were once part of this group. Their love affair and decision to have Ky broke the unit’s strict code, forcing them to go into hiding. While Isaac has focused on raising Ky, Kyrah has remained vigilant, secretly watching over them. But Isaac’s bank showdown draws unwanted attention, pulling him back into the crosshairs of their former allies and shattering their fragile anonymity.
Despite the strong performances and a promising setup, Shadow Force struggles to rise above its formulaic roots, its narrative muddied by a lack of visual flair and originality.
