Flight Risk 2025 Movie Review
“Flight Risk” squanders a talented cast and a promising premise under Mel Gibson’s lackluster direction, delivering a flat action thriller that never takes off. Michelle Dockery plays Madelyn, a US Marshal who arrests Winston (Topher Grace), a mob accountant turned informant, in the Alaskan wilderness.
Tasked with flying him to Seattle for trial, they board a small plane piloted by Daryl Booth (Mark Wahlberg), who’s revealed as a hitman posing as the real pilot, hired to kill Winston. While the hitman twist hints at suspense, its clumsy execution renders the story predictable and dull, failing to capitalize on the action-thriller setup.
The film falters with lackluster performances, a weak script, and cringe-inducing dialogue that drain any sense of urgency. Gibson’s direction, his weakest yet, lacks the spark of his past triumphs like Braveheart or Hacksaw Ridge. The opening arrest scene, meant to set a tense tone, feels lifeless, and the confined aircraft setting—ripe for claustrophobic thrills—falls flat.
Dockery’s Madelyn is solid but hampered by clunky lines. Wahlberg starts with promise but fades into a passive role after being tasered and chained. Grace’s Winston is especially lackluster, bringing no depth or energy. With just three main characters, Flight Risk had the chance to be a tight, gripping thriller but stumbles into mediocrity, a disappointing miss from a once-great director.
