Dear Hongrang Kdrama Review
The story begins with the disappearance of 8-year-old Hongrang, heir to the Sim family’s Min Merchant Guild, during a night of picking camellia flowers for his half-sister, Jae-yi. Twelve years later, a man (Lee Jae-wook) claiming to be Hongrang returns, but his lack of childhood memories and cold demeanor raise doubts, especially from Jae-yi (Jo Bo-ah).
As the Sim family—led by matriarch Min Yeon-ui (Uhm Ji-won) and patriarch Sim Yeol-guk (Park Byung-eun)—grapples with his return, secrets unravel involving adopted heir Mu-jin (Jung Ga-ram), the sinister Prince Hanpyeong (Kim Jae-wook), and a mysterious figure called “The Painter.” The narrative blends mystery, romance, and supernatural elements, exploring identity, grief, and betrayal against a backdrop of Joseon’s art trade and palace politics.
Lee Jae-wook delivers a career-defining performance as Hongrang, balancing vulnerability and intensity with a haunting presence. Jo Bo-ah shines as Jae-yi, portraying her resilience and emotional complexity with nuance. The supporting cast, particularly Uhm Ji-won’s chilling Min Yeon-ui and Kim Jae-wook’s charismatic yet menacing Prince Hanpyeong, elevates the drama. Jung Ga-ram and Park Byung-eun add depth to their conflicted roles.
