F1 The Movie Review
What defines a great film—or even a good one? Is it the artistry—stellar screenplay, tight pacing, standout performances, and technical mastery? Or is it simply about entertainment, even if it leans on familiar tropes that purists might dismiss? Joseph Kosinski’s IMAX spectacle, F1 (cue sarcastic Drive to Survive nod), straddles both worlds. It’s a blast on the big screen, blending the high-octane thrills of Top Gun and Rush into one adrenaline-pumping ride. Yet, it’s undeniably formulaic, hitting every predictable beat. Still, the experience never feels stale—the old wine’s in a shiny new bottle, and it’s primed to race at the box office.
Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) is a faded Formula One driver, his glory days cut short by a 1993 crash. Now in his 50s, he scrapes by in a camper van, racing in minor leagues. His life shifts when Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), his former teammate and owner of the struggling Apex F1 team, recruits him as a second driver. Ruben’s desperate to save his point-less team from being sold, banking on Sonny’s expertise to mentor rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). Sonny, haunted by personal demons, must navigate tension with Joshua and rally the team to chase victory against giants like Ferrari and Red Bull.
F1’s plot is as basic as it gets: a classic underdog tale of defying the odds. You can predict the ending—and even some cheesy lines—before the lights dim. But the magic lies in the journey, not the destination. Kosinski delivers a thrilling, polished ride that makes the familiar feel fresh and exhilarating.
