28 Years Later 2025 Movie Review
From its cryptic promotions to its gripping trailer, 28 Years Later sets up expectations of a frenetic zombie horror starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for roles in Avengers and Kraven the Hunter (the latter not his finest hour). Yet, Danny Boyle’s film masterfully subverts these assumptions. While it delivers a post-apocalyptic world, swarms of undead, and intense chases, the movie is, at its core, a poignant coming-of-age drama cloaked in horror. The true standout is 14-year-old Alfie Williams, whose unforgettable performance is destined to resonate for years, perhaps decades.
Set 28 years after the events of the franchise’s earlier films, 28 Years Later depicts Britain as a quarantined wasteland overrun by zombies, while the US and Europe flourish. Off the Scottish Highlands’ coast, a small group of survivors has carved out a sanctuary on an island, linked to the mainland by a causeway exposed only at low tide. Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) brings his 12-year-old son, Spike (Alfie Williams), to the mainland to teach him survival skills. But Spike uncovers his father’s web of lies, including the existence of a elusive doctor. Determined to save his ailing mother, Isla (Jodie Comer), Spike embarks on a perilous journey to find Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) for a cure, grappling with his own naivety, his mother’s hallucinations, and relentless waves of the undead.
