Elio 2025 Movie Review

Pixar’s Elio reimagines the classic tale of an orphaned child, weaving a story that extends beyond finding family at home to discovering connection across the cosmos. While not a groundbreaking journey into uncharted territory, it’s a heartfelt ride that resonates.

Elio (voiced by Kibreab), mourning his parents’ loss, proves a challenge for his aunt Olga (Saldana), an aspiring astronaut at a space base. Captivated by a presentation on the Voyager spacecraft—still journeying after 45 years—Elio clings to its message: “We may not be alone.” Determined to connect with extraterrestrial life, he scrawls messages in the sand, hoping for an alien “abduction.” His proximity to Olga’s space base makes the impossible feel tantalizingly close, and soon, Elio is whisked away to another world.

He arrives in the Communiverse, a dazzling realm of vibrant colors and floating creatures, a utopia crafted by “the universe’s most brilliant minds.” Mistaking Elio for Earth’s leader, they draw him into their conflict with Lord Grigon (Garrett), a menacing, metal-clad “Blood Emperor” with Marvel-esque flair. Elio, embracing the misunderstanding, navigates this vibrant world and forms a touching bond with Grigon’s son, Glordon (Edgerly). However, the narrative grows convoluted with subplots like cloning, and the film’s deeper themes may soar over younger viewers’ heads. The chaos of interworld conflicts sometimes overshadows the warmth of Elio’s friendships and discoveries, but the journey remains visually stunning and emotionally earnest.
